We are still working on bike, though we have not been very aggressive about it. Skyler however has been working hard to recover and returned to work quickly He however has had continued nagging back issues from the crash and returning to the track this season ... seems to be out of the question. Therefore, we are working on the business and helping out other riders through the season. We will see what late 08 and early 09 brings.

Thanks goes out to everyone who checked in on Skyler and helped us out through the process. It has been a learning journey, filled with some great new experiences and friends. All the best to all the racers for the a successful and safe race season ahead.

Bad High Side Ends Racing for Last Sunday

We were excited to get back to the track. We have taken a few months off for a couple reasons. During the last race in 2007, we sustained some braking problems and other mechanical issues. Those took awhile to resolve. Second, Skyler was heavily involved in growing Matrix Motosports and we needed to meet customer expectations for spring product needs. So we took sometime to focus on business, products, inventory and advertising.

All that said, we were anxious to get back to the track and hopefully do well with the bike, which was running great. During those few months, we switched from Dunlop to Michelin tires. Our Dunlop rep, Jim Cox, is a great guy, the decision was purely economics, since the Michelins are a little cheaper. We would have gladly paid a little more, if we thought it would have prevented what would happen later in day.

On Saturday, Skyler did a trackday and everything went well. We started on the new Michelins about noon. Got a few laps in that afternoon and practiced again Sunday morning. We were competing in two races in the afternoon. Then as the scond and last practice session was concluding, Skyler who was on Firebird East Track, went into turn one fine, transitioned to turn two and was coming out nicely.......... then the rear wheel broke free and slid from right to left without a known cause. Skyler feathered the throttle trying to control it, but the bike whipped back and bucked him off the bike in a 60MPH+ high side crash. Thank God for the right investment in Alpinestar racing suit and boots, Shoei helmets, spinal protection and great gloves. He landed on his left flank and slid for awhile, fighting off his bike, which was rolling onto him. Even with the wind knocked out of him, he thought he was alright, bruised but okay. Then within seconds he realized he was coughing up blood and the crash was more serious than he thought.

The track ambulance responded quickly and he went to Maricopa Memorial. Skyler spent a day or so in the hospital but was treated well by the trauma and critical care unit. They assessed him and handled his issues quickly. He will be very sore for a couple weeks. He request no jokes or use of the pepper shaker....... laughing and sneezing are not his friends right now.

We will be rebuilding, so stay tuned for what is to come.

Here is Skyler right before he heads out on track for that bad practice session.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/R9vs1wAitPI/AAAAAAAAAIM/B7pO0dIIYQo/s400/%2343-Holcombe.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5177992604756915442" />

On another sad note, we were sharing space with our sponsored bike of Ducati Scottsdale and its rider Rory Palmer. While we were off to the hospital, Rory had a low side crash, but it resulted in the bike have lots of damage, including ripping a 6" hole in the Ducati composite fuel tank. Rory is doing well but their race campaign is set back as well. More to come.

Podium Finish!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RzPHdNGxeUI/AAAAAAAAAEM/MDRO3EjGO-g/s400/3rd-place.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5130663705053329730" />
Great Sunday racing last weekend. Firebird Main track adds a whole new element of excitement. The track is fast down the straight and fast in the turns!

We entered two races, Middleweight Superbike and Middleweight GP. Morning practice went off well and Skyler was feeling the best he has ever felt on the bike. He was pumped to race. Jim Cox Racing (Dunlop) set us up with a new compound tire that Skyler said gripped better than any before.

We had a long wait through the late morning up to mid afternoon, when our race, Superbike came up. Skyler was set along the back of the grid. The race flag dropped and he had an amazing start slipping through everyone up to the front of the amateur class riders. For nearly two laps he held the amateur class lead and then was over taken in the back turns as he entered a turn too fast and had to check up. He held his position however and maintained third through out the remainder of the race. Skyler finished third in amateur and it was his first podium finish for a CCS race!

As he came off the track, I could see the mixed emotion in his face. He thought he had done well, but was concerned over a new problem. In the last part of the race, his brakes started to fade bad. We had about 40 minutes to the GP race and worked feverishly to resolve the issue. We bled the brakes looking for a line with air, and checked all the fittings... no leaks. We pumped and pumped the brakes and the lever just continued to compress to the throttle grip. We were baffled and up against the clock. In the last minutes, as we watched the other racers get on their helmets and mount the bikes, we knew we were missing the race.

A tough decision but a safe one. There was no way the brakes would hold for an extended 12 lap race like GP. It would have been foolish to try and risk injury to Skyler, the bike and the other riders. We called it a day and headed home for a cold one.

All in all, a long day for one race, but a great finish to be celebrated.

Firebird Main

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RyU4DPB_AHI/AAAAAAAAAD0/1Tx3yBzgCWg/s400/sky1016.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126565379056795762" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RyU4DfB_AII/AAAAAAAAAD8/7oUeb_LEIag/s400/911bike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126565383351763074" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RyU4D_B_AJI/AAAAAAAAAEE/a3GBnFf2PK8/s400/911bike2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126565391941697682" />
We had track day last weekend in preparation for the races next weekend. New track for us, Firebird Main. Firebird is divided into several tracks. We have ridden on the East and West tracks, but the Main track was all new to us.

Main is made up of a large snaking back track and then a turn around the Firebird drag strip tower, then on to the 1/4 mile plus drag strip. The turn on to the strip was slick. Several riders slide out early on, but it cleaned up and warmed up to be a fast transition. Skyler kept working the turn and eventually figured out the apex that worked best for him.

We were also blown around this afternoon by the winds coming across the desert. This is also the same day many of the fires in So. California started up. We had to take down our tents to prevent damage. Can't imagine fighting a wildfire in those winds. I use to be in fire investigation, so I can speak with some experience. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those in California impacted by the fires. The track day sponsor took down the timing beacon about halfway through the day, so we were not able to keep accurate track of our times. Skyler however was thrilled with the opportunity to open the bike up and hit 5 gears in the strip. Against my better judgement, I let him convince me to give him my GOS to track his speed. The bike has been modified and only the tach works on the instrument panel. GPS came back with top speed at 150 MPH. Oh, that makes a Dad feel good, NOT! A few more prayers each trackday please. The 1000cc bikes go even faster. Skyler of course wants a bigger bike.

The day overall went well. No get offs, and no damage. We need to check a few suspension things, but otherwise we are set for the next race.

Our bike painter, Tom Hilsdorf, did a beautiful paint job on his bike ,only to have a slide out soon after he rode of for the first time. This was a few weeks ago. Thsi week he came back with some hilarious stickers made up like bandaids to draw attention to the damage and his bike. LOL.

Racing Fun

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rv_3N0_oyKI/AAAAAAAAADs/B_8pInHKi_I/s400/sky1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116079518652090530" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rv_3CU_oyJI/AAAAAAAAADk/CNnMq810VjM/s400/sky2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116079321083594898" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rv_21U_oyII/AAAAAAAAADc/UeNBAsTaWD4/s400/header1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116079097745295490" />
Between our post and today, we completed another weekend track day and the first fall race for CCS on 09-29-07. The training Matt Hartlieb gave to Skyler is paying off. Instead of brake point and shoot, he has smoothed out the handling of the bike and is now feeling really comfortable. He commented several times how relaxed he feels on the bike.

That has paid off! The racing yesterday was day of speed and fun. Skyler gained significant confidence in his bike handling and was more agressive in the turns. He didn't get a podium finish, but he raced in three classes; middelweight Superbike, Heavyweight Superbike and Middleweight GP. He worked hard and was consistent in his lap times. We also have an easy early October with no bike repairs to be made (yeah!) We will be doing some fine tuning stuff, but I think we can head into October a little better off than we did previous months, always scrambling for parts and crash repairs. I know our painter, Tom Hilsdorf had some misfortune last track day and crashed his newly painted bike. I almost thought I saw him this past race weekend doing a little "black juju" on some bikes, trying to get some repeat business so he can afford his repairs ; -) (only kidding) He is top notch and we really like how our final race skins came out looking. Thanks Tom. (http://www.tcpaintworks.com/)

Sunday was also a raceday, but we decided to save ourselves and the bike and enjoy one race day of success and use that to carry us into October. Coming into the season so late, we are not in a points race and this year is just for experience and learning. .......later

Great Practice

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RuaTulZyKcI/AAAAAAAAADM/0odm2n6xCio/s400/Matrix.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108933255821928898" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RuaTu1ZyKdI/AAAAAAAAADU/wi21uRH38zE/s400/matrix2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108933260116896210" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RuaTb1ZyKbI/AAAAAAAAADE/s67CYnuNVKY/s400/matrixsky.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108932933699381682" />
Trackday by Team Arizona was this past Sunday. We worked hard to get everything ready, and after a few more turns of the wrench at the track that morning, the bike was ready to go. This day, we got a few sessions in to get use to Firebord West track. Only been on it once before. Perserverance our motto for now, was clearly diplayed. Skyler was alittle uneasy at first not knowing what I had placed on his motorcycle. We have great fun pulling pranks on each other and he was looking me straight in the eyes trying to see if I was being deceiving when I told him the truth about the letters. Good to keep your kids guessing! ;- )

Later in the morning, Matt Hartleib started to help Skyler out. He lead Skyler through the track, showing the best lines, then followed him for awhile seeing what he was doing as far as braking, looking, pointing and body positioning. Then Skyler went out again in the next session. After that he came back in smiling. "Man what a difference" Matt had pointed out some techniques that he should develop and incorporate into his riding. This time trail braking, which Skyler had not been doing enough of. He was now positioning himself sooner, using trailing brake technique and smoothing out the corners. His over positioning was changing an basically quieting the bike in transitions.

We were not doing lap times and focusing on the basics of riding. Trying to build some better habits that would be natural at higher speeds later.

Overall the day was a success. We got a fair amount of laptime in, did a good shake down of bike after rebuild from last crash and learned some new techniques that will carry him even further. Because of the heat we scrubbed the last session. If the rider is exhausted, then he will make mistakes. Skyler showed the maturity to make the right decision and ask to stop early. I agreed, and I am glad to see him taking all the factors into consideration and making smart and safe decisions.

Hats off to Matt for his assistance.

Perserverance

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rt6qllZyKaI/AAAAAAAAAC8/QiwT2sdntRU/s320/Fall-Seven-Web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106706590156859810" />
Skyler doesn't want to hear me talking about the crashes. I don't really want to do it either. I know he takes responsibility whether the event is related to bike, road or rider. I think we need a silent reminder to keep the lessons learned close by, without neccessarily duct taping a broken part to the tail of the bike.

An old Japanese proverb goes....."fall seven times, stand up eight". It teaches perserverance, to continue on and push through. Success will come to thoses that prevail. That proverb now rides with us and will hopefully give us strength to learn and succeed. If you are at the track look for it on the practice and race bike skins.

Last Parts - for now

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rt4PcFZyKZI/AAAAAAAAAC0/jed3NkO3OUg/s320/04-05-GSXR750big.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106536002645797266" />
We have been working hard trying to get everything back together before this weekend's Track Day. Oh crap, I just realized I forgot to schedule and pay for this upcoming weekend. (excuse me....)

Okay , left begging message that we needed to register for track day, will pay by CC tomorrow. Hope they hold spot.

Back to the bike, the next to the last part arrived today. Rear subframe and fairing bracket from R & R Racing in Illinois. Wow, nice welding and products. (r-r-racing.com) Service was great and a pleasure to deal with. I have attached some product photos of what we got.

I painted the replacement practice skins, and not too bad for rattle can, if I say so myself. Two colors, red and white to match race skins. Left the numbers off. When we get it together I'll post a couple shots. I kept telling Skyler I was painting them purple or pink and even threatened to paint arrows with "This side up" on it. He was relieved to see it look normal.

The last part is a CRG lever, I ordered at last minute. FedEx and I have a love hate relationship. They love me, I hate them (or should I say their cost).

So far we have added Vortex sprocket, Woodcraft sliders and clip ons, new skins, tires, pegs, laptimer, gear indicator, windshield, etc, etc. I think we have it under control. Of course you would really have to ask Skyler, since he is the one putting it all back together. I am the producer, he is the director and actor. Not a bad analogy.

What we really miss is experience, and I think we have some help on the way. Matt Hartlieb, a successful racer and instructor has agreed to assist us this weekend coming and really give Skyler training on technique and more. We really need it. Skyler is getting towards the times he needs, but I think he needs the training to figure out how to get the most out of the bike safely. I have come to learn, professional lessons are cheaper than repairs. I am sure many have learned that before, but they were all waiting for me learn the hard lesson myself. Thanks everyone!

Rebuilding, Revising and Relearning

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RtV_P1ZyKWI/AAAAAAAAACc/hbpCab4V4_E/s400/bike2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104125662704314722" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RtV_P1ZyKXI/AAAAAAAAACk/WdlZHob7540/s400/bike1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104125662704314738" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RtV_QFZyKYI/AAAAAAAAACs/O4HssyS2sPg/s400/bike3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5104125666999282050" />
Since the track day crash, we have been getting all the needed parts and working many hours to get ready for a few more practices and then continued racing in fall.

We were lucky! The frame, motor, rims and forks were undamaged. So all we really had to do was replace the following:

clips ons (handle bars)
grips
brake resevouir
brake line
tires
full race fairings
front fairing bracket
rear sub frame
sliders
sprocket
chain
pegs
windshield
tank repaired and repainted
paint, numbers, decals

Nothing money cannot buy (if I had it!). Of course we will need to reset bike up when we get to track. We are also looking for a good coach to work with Skyler and shake out whatever technique issues he has or bike issues that are keeping him from going as afast he is capable. He has been riding faster and faster and somewhere between his technique or the bike we are missing something. This is where we suck it up and admit that we need directions and help.

Two weeks to track day and four weeks to race day. Gotta lot to do, gotta go......... ride safe.

Ouch!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rr-00kdwk9I/AAAAAAAAACE/occdpSp5p9I/s400/oops.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097992118441382866" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rr-0mUdwk8I/AAAAAAAAAB8/um5t3-Yhfb8/s400/sky5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097991873628246978" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rr-ze0dwk6I/AAAAAAAAABs/RJ3mCy9NG2A/s400/sky2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097990645267600290" />
Today was a rough day. We started off a little late, as track gate opened at 5AM and we were a few minutes behind. Missed first session and hurried to get ready for next. We thought we had everything set......

The day before, Chris Taylor of Tayler Made Racing installed our new Penske shock and we were looking forward to seeing what improvements that provided. Tom Hilsdorf also delivered our new race skins, which we did not have on today (thank you guardian angel!). Over the summer, we have fine tuned bike and looked forward to fall racing schedule.

Skyler was doing well. Went out on his first session and tested shock and got comfortable again after a summer break (remember its hot in Phoenix, and today was 109). In the second session he was hitting 1:01 and 1:02 consistently, with 1:01:43 his best time. That is several seconds off his previous runs and race and right in the needed race times for his classes. Fantastic........ then..... In the last lap of the second session, he went around a long sweeper, leaning until he tucked the front, low siding the bike in a long right hander. He slide out and was unhurt, (thanks again angel) popping to his feet quickly. Unfortunately, the bike also did a slide, hop, twist, flip, end over end and final nose dive. The GSXR600 was crushed in front in back.

Skyler was obviously angry and confused as to what happened. We did not get photos of the crash event but all the other shots don't leave us a clue as to why the rear went out on the bike. This crash will result in some significant repairs. He is undaunted, and wants to continue. I am proud of his courage and commitment , but pride is making me poor. So off we go in search of parts and knowledge. Stay tuned. First race is 4 weeks away, we have a lot of work to do.

Summer Activity

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RqvuIEdwk4I/AAAAAAAAABc/t21QzcjACtI/s400/cp07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5092425626077401986" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RqvuIUdwk5I/AAAAAAAAABk/r4PAhc_L6u4/s400/GP07.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5092425630372369298" />

Unlike the rest of the motorcycle racing world in July, the schedule for CCS takes a little break between June and September. It's only 115 in shade and track temps are 180+.(who needs tire warmers!) We have been getting the bike prepared for the next practice session and race. Our fuel pump problem seems to be resolving, especially with the help a good friend, Scott. He found a used pump for us to replace the old one, instead of the $700 quote the local Suzuki dealer wanted. Thanks Scott!

Tom Hilsdorf is painting the new skins in a red and white theme and we look forward to seeing the results of his creativity. We'll post some pictures when done.

We are also waiting for our new rear Penske shock to come in so we can install and tune to Skyler. We think this will stabilize the bike more for corners and lessen his mid race dismounts, though he did score a 9.7 for the last low side slide and gravel recovery.

We have also taken a well earned vacation. Skyler and I rode around California from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and back down to Monterey for Laguna Seca's Moto GP 2007. What a blast! Great riding weather, fantastic racing and some good times shared between us.

The nights at Monterey were cool, literally 60 degrees! That beats Phoenix's 110 at midnight anyday. Chris Pfeiffer from Red Bull & BMW did a trick riding show on Alvarado Street in Monterey and thrilled the crowd. We have seen him in Koln Germany before at Intermot, but he exciting to watch everytime. Just when you think he has lost it and is about to crash into the crowd, he pulls a stoppie and kisses a girl over the security rail. He then spins, rides full speed to the other end and does 720 degree spins and more. Incredible to watch.

Then back to the track the next day to watch the GP race. We had grandstand tickets but moved around the track checking everything out. I had a new camera system, but catching the bikes at almost 200mph is challenging, even for the pros. Photos from Laguna Seca and other events can be seen at http://www.conpix.smugmug.com/ Just select a gallery and you can view all the shots.

Racing time is nearing and we are working hard to do well this fall. Wish us luck, and safe riding to everyone.

Race Day !

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/RkkpjXMkIQI/AAAAAAAAAA0/MIDhaPOJ4hU/s400/GSXR600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5064624943453708546" />
We finally got to race day. We have been so busy the past two weeks, I have not had a chance to add in any new post. So here is a combined update.

We had to make a decision about some modifications. We wanted to improve the rear suspension and wanted to get rid of the chatter on down shifting in high speeds entering corners. After some debate we agreed to work on the chatter. We purchased a Yoyodyne slipper clutch which helps eliminate the rear wheel skip on engine braking. We would tackle the suspension later. That may have come back to bite us (more later).

We order the clutch and as usual 2 days before track day we find that we need a special spindel nut for the clutch that should be replaced each rebuild. When I called Suzuki stores and discussed the rebuild no one mentioned this. Now with 48 hours before track day, that I already purchased, I needed this damn nut. Called Suzuki shops in Phoenix, Tucson, San Diego, Las Vegas.... and no one stocks it and no one was going out of their way to help us get it. Finally our prayers are answered and Honda of Hollywood has one... in stock! But, it is now Friday afternoon and I have to ship FedEx, Saturday delivery. Bada bing, I didn't want to pay for the whole truck, just get the package! That hurt the wallet.

We got the clutch in and made some other minor additions, then headed off to another trackday to test our changes. What a FUBAR of a day. We bought track time to work Firebird East again, where our first race would be. When we got there Firebird double booked the track and sent the motorcycles off to West track. That track hadn't been used in a little bit and it was sandy, dirty and unprepared. The first 90 minutes of the day was spent watching folks ride their diesel trucks, and cars around the track trying to kick the dirt and blow it off. I think the day ended with about 8 or 9 wrecks, 3 of which were totals. Skyler did a low side slide entering the loop in track turn 8. We were on tires that were on their 3rd track day and added with dust, dirt and frustration, he lost it. Not sure what happened, just spun out. Little damage done. The one inch over sized frame sliders have been a saving factor for damage control in this learning process.

The trackday also ended with clutch problems. We rebuilt clutch with new parts and did not know about some modifications to the plate order that Yoyodyne recommended. It was later discovered that we burned up one plate and got a shim caught in the slipper. It's racing and learning at the most expensive level. Clutch Nut.... $6.83......, shipping..... $52.35, Sunday trackday..... burnt clutch, Monday, need a new nut, Frustrated Feeling... PRICELESS. The next nut only has to come second day air because I now have 5 days for rebuild before race weekend. It's getting a little cheaper. That's my rationale and I am sticking to it.

Race weekend

This past week our new racing skins were shipped from California, via Atlanta to us in Arizona. Needless to say we did not get them in time and had our painter Tom Hilsdorf paint the old ones white. No problem, were rolling with it. Late Friday night, skins on, clutch in, some new addtional odds and ends and we are ready to go.

On Saturday, Skyler does a half day of track time and then his CCS Racers Clinic. The mock race goes off without a hitch and he passes the class and is ready to go. Pack up and pray for a fun day of racing on Sunday.

Sunday morning we are at the track bright and early. Today it will only be 105 to 107 degrees. Skyler registers for Middleweight Super Sport, Middle weight Superbike, Heavy weight Superbike and GP. We get on the track for some practice and on the last couple laps of session 3, 30 mins before his first race, the bike loses all power above 7000 RPM. We are immediately at a loss and other fellow racers chip in with some ideas. Turns out that as we take the tank off and check the fuel pump, it falls apart. No spare fuel pump could be found, so we rig the old one up, safety wire the parts and reinsert it into the tank. Viola, we have a working bike..... just as his first race takes of from starting grid. We missed it.

Okay, three more races, no problem. Sklyer gets psyched for race 8, the middle weight superbike. He takes off well, and gets about 3/4 of the way through the race when in turn 6 he catches a his right peg and the rear spins out. Another low slide out and he dismounts rather gracefully planting his heels and popping up into a jog across the gravel. The bike spins out on the other side of the track and comes to rest near the pit entrance. Skyler is unhurt, but angry and frustracted at the mishap. The bike fairs well and only has the renewed rash on the right side, that we just covered in new paint, and a ground down peg and frame slider. (I am looking for a good investment in frame slider company, know any?) Anyway, remember that suspension versus clutch decision. Turns out it may have been the rear suspension giving in too much that allowed the bike to compress and let the peg hit. Who would have thunk it.

Now the hard part......, race day is also Mother's Day and to show her support, Skyler's Mom, my wife, Debra comes to the track to watch her son fly around the track and do everything she tried to protect him from. Her first race experience with us and he does a crash right in front of her.... Happy Mother's Day Mom ! My wife is still recovering from that emotional roller coaster ride. Love ya, and we understand if it is awhile before you return.

We get back to our pit area and Skyler gets his head together. Unfortunately the slide took out some rear brake linkage as well. It takes us all the way to third and final call for his next race, race 10, to get him running. He flys out and does a good job coming in seventh. He was glad to just finish and complete his first race.

The day wears on and the GP race is the final for the day. 12 laps, 106 degrees and we have been in sun for 2 days. Nothing however is deterring Skyler from this race. He starts off slow and goes into first turn at the end of the pack. Despite the heat he continues to press on and passes 3 of his amatuer riders to move up in the race. He is relived to get near end of race and put this first day to rest. With the race in the last lap, Rory Palmer, the prevous bike owner, new friend and expert rider approaches Skyler from rear and laps him in final lap. Rory, with his sense of humor and good spirits, decides to throttle down his bike for an instant, just to stay even with Skyler, and to tap him on the arm, smile and wink as he passes him toward finish. Skyler laughs and takes it in knowing that he has just experienced most of what racing offers with levels of hope, frustration, exhaustion, accomplishment and friendship.

Thanks to all for making this first race day as great as possible. We are truely hooked and looking forward to the fall schedule. It is giving us some time to get the bike to the next level. We are awaiting a Yoyodyne slipper clutch, new plates, and some other odds and ends. Trackday is next weekend, and we will paint the bike the week after before race clinic. Skyler is also rebuilding front end, as his agressive braking blew the front fork seals. All normal maintenance.

We also got a trailer and installed I track on walls and floor. Overall, we think we have most things under control.. optimum word "think". Supplies like clutch plates we thought were available locally have not been. Some great race supporters though, took care of us and got the items shipped right away.

So far, we have been thrilled with the race community and their support. Everyone lends a us hand and gives us some advice. Great competitive spirit and community.

Firebird Track Day 2

Great week and track day. Last weeks slide out left us with a short right peg. Ron, another racer and a machinist was great to knock out some new pegs on a moments notice. We searched around for a trailer and found a cheap deal in Tucson. Skyler drove down and picked up the almost new 6X10 trailer.

We are still finalizing the color scheme, but Skyler doesn't seem to mind the primer. Somehow I think he may just clearcoat it and call it scheme. We'll see.

Skyler started off trackday slow. His low side slide out last week got in his head a little, then he shook it off after a session. His best laps cut off 2.5 seconds from last week. His best this past Sunday was 1 minute 7.131 seconds. Very respectable for his second day on this bike and track.

The whole project is coming together and we will have one more track day before new racer class and licensing. We are looking forward to watching some CCS racing next weekend.

Survived First Trackday

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_xba-m0OlMcM/Rh7hFPKx3kI/AAAAAAAAAAs/tPUEu7z23Go/s400/sky4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5052723312043613762" />
This past Sunday, we got all our gear together and went to Firebird Track (East) for Skyler's and Matrix's first trackday on the Suzuki GSX R600. The zebra paint has been sanded off and the bike is in primer, still waiting for us to decide on a paint/color scheme. Skyler went onto the track with enthusiasm and speed. We refused to give him lap times all day, knowing that he is highly competitive and would focus on beating himself instead of developing techniques. He continued to improve his times all day. His best this first day out was 1 Minute 09.628 Seconds. Considering that his group was all beginners and he often had to wait to past, he did a great job. Race times are usually about one minute.

He had one low side dismount ;- ) in turn one. He dropped a gear and the rear spun out. He immediately bounced up, re-teched the bike and went back on the track. Little damage, just some wear and tear marks.

We are on again for a trackday this Sunday. I know he will ask us for times again, and again we will lie and deny clocking him. Let's just hope for a fun, fast, safe day.

Racing Begins

My son and I have been talking about starting a SuperSport motorcycle racing team for many years. Skyler, my son, is a certified motorcycle mechanic and we thought we would start off with a project bike and build it for racing. He has just finished a frame up restoration on an 82 BMW R65LS into a cafe racer that he rides. He has ridden street and dirt and he is talented and fearless at everything else he has tried, so we thought this would be a good focus for the future.

On the same day we decide to move forward, a friend, David Slepak, owner of Euro Motorsports, advises me that Rory Palmer, who is now racing for him, is selling his personal race bike a 2005 Suzuki GSXR 600. It is well known in the CCS Southwest as the Zebra bike. (see photo) Rory just happens to be in the parking lot with his Dad. We strike up a conversation and then a deal. The bike is ready to go, but out of respect for Rory's identity as the Zebra racer, we will paint it with a new scheme.

This is a new venture and since we jumped in with both feet so fast, we had some other surprises. Tire warmers $339.00! Generator $899!, Leather Race Suit (gotta keep my kid's butt safe) $1400, Helmet, gloves, boots, trailer, tent, ... $$$$. Oh yeah, Trackdays and more Trac$days and more Trac$$days and more Tra$$$days and more T$$$$$ys, you get the idea...

We will keep the TEAM MATRIX blog updated with information about equipment, events, racing, and a little humor. Please check back for more.

Matrix Motosports, LLC is the only official sponsor of the team at this time. For those curious, the following are our current equipment manufacturers and suppliers.

Matrix Motosports, LLC

Suzuki - GSX-R600

Euro Motorsports, LC

Race Tech Suspension

Hindle Exhaust

DynoJet Power Commander

Scotts

Tenn2Cycles Tire Warmers

Alpinestars

Arai
